Everything the bottle tells you

Tap each point to see what it means. A Scotch Single Malt label is a technical sheet in miniature.

Composition

Three ingredients and the wood

By law, a Single Malt Scotch is made only from malted barley, water and yeast, at a single distillery, distilled in copper pot stills and matured in oak in Scotland. No other cereals.

Ingredient

Malted barley

Germinated and dried. It brings the sugars and the body: biscuit, cereal, oats.

Ingredient

Speyside water

Soft Highland water, the base of the mashing and of the final reduction.

Ingredient

Yeast

Turns the wort into a malt-beer “wash” and adds fruity notes.

Wood

Ex-Bourbon oak

American oak casks that previously held Bourbon: honey, vanilla and gentle sweetness.

Who we are

Choosing wisely

We're more than whisky. Behind every bottle in the selection there's a story, and someone who knows how to tell it.

Pouring Inverspey into a whisky glass

Knowledge

Many years of enjoying whisky, learning from it and getting to know its roots.

Travel

Many trips to its homelands, which are also our family's. That's where what we choose comes from.

Teaching

We want buying a whisky to be a different experience, and for you to know what you're choosing. If you have any questions, talk to me.

Malt or Blend

Single Malt or Blend?

The two great families of Scotch whisky. Neither is better than the other: the origin, the ingredients and the style are what change. The choice comes down to your taste.

Single Malt

One distillery
Ingredients
Only malted barley, water and yeast.
Origin
A single distillery, with its own place and its own way of working.
Distillation
Copper pot stills, in batches. The shape of the still influences the flavour.
Maturation and age
At least 3 years in oak casks. If the label states an age (10, 12 years), it is the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle, which may include older malts.
Character
More body and personality. The differences between regions show: Speyside, Highlands, Islay.

Blend

Several distilleries
Ingredients
Malt whiskies combined with grain whiskies, such as wheat or corn.
Origin
Several distilleries. The master blender builds the blend.
Distillation
Malt in pot stills, grain in continuous column stills.
Maturation and age
In Scotch, also at least 3 years in oak. The stated age is that of the youngest whisky in the blend.
Character
Balanced, smooth and rounded. Making a great blend is an art.

Blended Malt

A mix of malts from different distilleries, with no grain whisky. It used to be called Vatted or Pure Malt.

A little history

Blends were born in the 19th century to give a more consistent flavour and to lower costs with grain whisky. Today they are the best-selling category in the world.

Which is better?

Neither, by definition. Single Malt is prized for its body and its origin; blend, for its smoothness and balance.

Quick test

Malt or Blend: which is yours?

Three questions and we'll suggest where to start in the shop.

How will you drink it?
What do you look for in a glass?
Who is it for?

Pick one option for each question.
